Hard to Say is a variable edition of four books. Each book contains ten double-sided pages of marbled paper. The acrylic marbling was done on sheets of handmade cotton paper by Dieu Donné. The suminagashi was marbled on sheets of washi, mostly by Kubota in Shimane and Ishimoto in Kochi.
This book was made immediately after Touching, and in contrast with the immensely complicated and layered process of that book, this one is a simple pamphlet binding that focuses on the relationship of the patterns side-by-side. Like touching, these papers were made between 2016-2019 and focus on moments of beauty and surprise during a time in my practice where my work was shifting between beginner’s mind and a greater knowledge of and interest in craft and the possibilities for beauty and surprise within that space.
